Earthly Angels

Earthly Angels is Vaasa Baroque’s ensemble, that works both nationally and internationally. It was founded in 2016 by Kajsa Dahlbäck for her artistic doctoral studies (finished in 2021) and in 2018 the first album was released with music by composers such as Isabella Leonarda, Chiara Margarita Cozzolani and Rosa Giacinta Badalla. “Earthly Angels – Music from 17th Century Nun Convents” was rewarded the prestigious YLE Album of the Year 2018 by Finnish Broadcasting Company. Since then the ensemble has created many different concert programs and performed at numerous festivals and concert halls. In 2021 the second album “La Rêveuse” was released, containing French music by composers such as Joseph Chabanceau De La Barre, Julie Pinel and Marin Marais.

In 2020 a video concert “Isabella Leonarda 400 years!” was released online on Youtube, to celebrate 400 years since the birth of Italian composer Isabella Leonarda. In 2023 the next album will be released, with music from 17th century England and hymns in Swedish and Finnish.

In 2023 Earthly Angels premiered their first staged work: “Earthly Angels: Passion”. In this work music by composers Rosa Giacinta Badalla and Chiara Margarita Cozzolani is combined with Olli Virtaperko’s new music. The new staged work was received very well by media and the audience.

The ensemble has received grants from the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture, Swedish Cultural Foundation and Finnish Cultural Foundation.
